Tölt is one of the most famous and beloved gait of the Icelandic horse

Tölt is as unique as it is comfortable. It is a four‑beat gait in which the horse always has one or two feet on the ground. This makes the movement incredibly smooth and steady — so smooth that many say you could carry a full cup of coffee without spilling a drop.
In tölt, there is no moment of suspension like in the trot, which means the rider doesn’t bounce up and down but glides forward in a soft, even motion. Tölt is a natural gait and can often be seen in foals within their first days of life.
Tölt requires good body control, a strong back, and balance, showcasing both the agility and power of the horse.
It was invaluable for long journeys in Iceland and remains today one of the defining traits that make the Icelandic horse so unique and sought‑after around the world.
