The Icelandic horse is the only horse breed in Iceland

The Icelandic horse is the only horse breed in Iceland — and that is no coincidence.

Since the 10th century, there has been a complete ban on importing horses, and that rule still stands today.

The reason is simple: the Icelandic horse has lived in an isolated environment for more than a thousand years. It has developed a unique immune system that cannot protect it against diseases commonly found elsewhere in the world.

If a foreign horse were brought into the country, even a single contagious cough or equine virus could cause devastating damage to the entire population.

For the same reason, an Icelandic horse that leaves the country is never allowed to return.

This rule has preserved the Icelandic horse through the centuries — a breed that is remarkably strong, resilient, and unchanged in its core qualities since the age of settlement.

The Icelandic horse is therefore not just an animal — it is a living heritage that the nation protects with deep respect.
