The Icelandic horse is small in size
but incredibly strong

Icelandic horses are small compared to many other breeds, yet they are remarkably strong and capable of carrying an adult rider all day long.
Although the Icelandic horse is compact, its strength surprises most people.
Research from Hólar University and the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences shows that it can carry an unusually high percentage of its own body weight — about 23–35%, depending on training and conformation. This means that an average horse weighing 350–400 kg can comfortably carry 80–120 kg without experiencing harmful strain.
This strength is the result of a thousand years of adaptation to Icelandic conditions: the horse had to travel over mountains, lava fields, and rivers with adult riders and cargo, often in harsh weather.
Over time, it developed dense musculature, a strong back, and tough hooves that allow it to carry weight for long periods without fatigue.
This is why it is always classified as a horse, never a pony — it is simply too strong and too enduring.
