The Icelandic horse is one of the purest horse breeds in the world, an achievement shared by very few animals.

Since the 10th century, no other horses have been imported to Iceland, meaning the breed has developed without outside mixing for more than a thousand years. This makes the Icelandic horse a living time capsule: it carries the same genetic traits as the horses that arrived with the first settlers.

This purity has preserved unique qualities such as tölt, strong conformation, endurance, and a calm temperament. It has also ensured an extraordinary variety of coat colours, since no new genes have disrupted the patterns.

This isolation makes the breed both special and vulnerable, and it is therefore protected with great care.

The Icelandic horse is not only purebred — it is a vital part of the nation’s cultural identity.
